Article: 5 Foods That Can Make Autism Worse (from Amen Clinics)

Posted: April 11, 2017 12:00 am

Having seen more than 1,000 patients with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at Amen Clinics, one of the first lessons we learned is that the condition is not caused by one specific thing in the brain; there are actually 8-10 different factors that influence abnormal brain function.

For some with ASD, we see brains that are wildly overactive – often due to an inflammatory process. For others, we see brains with dramatic under-activity, that may be due to a toxin or some type of insult or injury to the brain.

This is one of the reasons why it is so important to look at brain function when coming up with a treatment plan for ASD. Throwing medication-tipped darts in the dark can hurt people. But there is one thing that ALL people with ASD should do regardless of whether their brains are overactive or under-active…eliminate anything that can hurt their brain.

Along those lines, it is important to realize that the food you eat is either medicine or it is poison. Here are the top 5 foods to avoid as they can make ASD worse.

When casein (one of the proteins in dairy) mixes with stomach acid, it produces something called an exorphin. Exorphins bind to the opioid receptor sites and can result in a myriad of troubles – brain fog, spaciness, inability to concentrate, and a numbness to pain, just to name a few.

In our experience, when people with ASD removed dairy from their diet, they began talking more, their hyperactivity was reduced, and bowel problems were resolved.

A mixture of proteins found in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye, gluten can increase inflammation when ingested. In fact, your body can create antibodies to gluten which can fire up, or inflame, your brain.

Gluten seems to particularly negatively affect the functioning of the cerebellum. Through our imaging work, we have discovered that those with ASD already often have decreased functioning of their cerebellum – consuming gluten can just make it much worse.

Eighty-five percent of the corn raised in the United States is raised with pesticide. Additionally, it has the most unhealthy fatty-acid profile of any grain…yes, you read that right, GRAIN. Corn is NOT a vegetable. Corn has been found to be a breeding ground for as many as 22 different fungi. There is simply nothing truly beneficial and many potentially harmful things that can come from eating corn.

Not only is sugar pro-inflammatory, it also increases erratic brain cell firing and it is very addictive. For many folks with ASD, it is likely that they had some type of insulin to their brain so when they consume sugar, the damage from the insulin is just magnified.

Avoiding sugar and refined carbohydrates and increasing lean protein can dramatically improve concentration and judgment, and decrease impulsiveness.

While these things are not really “foods”, they are unfortunately in so many food products that we wanted to list them here. Avoid all additives, preservatives, dyes and artificial colors, artificial flavorings, and artificial sweeteners.

Article: Why milk is bad for you

I stopped drinking milk many many years ago… some people are afraid that they wont get enough calcium if they don’t drink milk – there are many other things that are better sources, sesame seeds is one of the better…
OCTOBER 30, 2014 BY

Milk Destroys Your Bones From the Inside But Everyone Drinks It Every Day!

We are all well familiar with the slogan “Got Milk?”…. This marketing strategy has worked for years. The entire society (backed up by government suggestions) vigorously promotes the consumption of dairy. How else are we going to get the calcium and Vitamin D that is proudly featured on every carton of milk? Well, along with the promised calcium and added Vitamin D, you are a getting other things that might make you reconsider drinking pasteurized milk. So what are the dangers of conventional pasteurized milk?

The study, which followed 61,433 women aged 39 to 74 over 20 years, and 45,339 men of similar age for 11 years, found that the more cow’s milk people drank, the more likely they were to die or experience a bone fracture during the study period. So why does milk cause osteoporosis and bone fractures?

The pasteurization process creates calcium carbonate which can not enter the cells without a chelating agent. So this makes your body pull the calcium from the bones and other tissues in order to buffer the calcium carbonate in the blood. This process actually causes osteoporosis.

Dairy Products are Acidifying. Milk Destroys Your Bones From the Inside.

Cow’s milk and its products produce acid. The consumption of milk creates a net metabolic acidity in the body. In order to return to a body’s natural alkaline state and neutralize the acidity, calcium and phosphorous are drawn from your bones. Many scientific studies have shown that not only do our bodies barely absorb the calcium in cow’s milk, but actually calcium loss is increased. Amy Lanou Ph.D., nutrition director for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington, D.C., states, “The countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis are the ones where people drink the most milk and have the most calcium in their diets. The connection between calcium consumption and bone health is actually very weak, and the connection between dairy consumption and bone health is almost nonexistent.”

Elevated Insulin Levels

Milk is very insulinogenic. Even though the glycemic index of dairy products is relatively low, it has a high insulin index. Researchers have found that both proteins in milk, casein and whey, stimulate the production of insulin from the pancreas. In 2001 the study of 3,000 infants with genetically increased risk for developing diabetes was done in Finland. It demonstrated that early introduction of cow’s milk increased susceptibility to type 1 diabetes.

There are other alternatives to drinking milk which include raw fermented choices such as whole milk yogurt, kefir, cultured butter, clotted milk. The general process of milk fermentation involves the production of lactic acid from lactose in the milk. Fermentation increases the shelf-life of the product,  and improves the digestibility of milk.

Casein Intolerance

The Untold Story of Milk, Revised and Updated: The History, Politics and Science of Nature’s Perfect Food: Raw Milk from Pasture-Fed Cows

Casein is the main protein in milk and dairy products. Casein acts in a similar way to gluten which can potentially lead to severe auto-immune problems. If you are gluten intolerant, you are most likely casein intolerant as well. Respiratory problems, allergies and illnesses are associated with the consumption of casein.  Dr. T. Campbell wrote in his book “The China Study” about a very vivid correlation between animal protein consumption and cancer development, thus showing that casein protein promoted cancer in every stage of its development. The casein protein found in milk is called A1 beta casein which is a long chain of amino acids. It is believed to be the result of a genetic mutation in cattle.  The protein found in ancient breeds of cattle is called beta-casein A2. During digestion A1 beta casein is broken down into a peptide flow of 7 amino acids called beta casomorphin (BCM7). Beta-casein A1 has a weak bond to  BCM7. Thus, much of BCM7 gets into our bloodstream, which can easily pass through the blood brain barrier into the brain where it can bind to opioid receptors. These opioids have an effect on immune function which is linked to autoimmune disorders. The absorption of BCM7 activates many changes in the immune system, in the brain, and in the blood vessels.

10-Year-Old Reverses “Incurable” Autoimmune Disease with Simple Diet Changes: “I’m Off All These Stupid Medications…and I Feel Great!”

Isabel was able to overcome an "incurable" disease through dietary changes and supplements.

When Dr. Mark Hyman first saw Isabel, 10 years old at the time, she had a severe case of an autoimmune disease, classified as a mixed connective tissue disease. The MCTD diagnosis includes rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus eyrthematosus, and other similar diseases with extremely debilitating side effects that can drastically reduce quality of life. The disease is deemed to be incurable.

As shown in the picture above, the disease affected her whole body from top to bottom: blood vessels, white and red blood cells, liver, and muscles. Her skin was inflamed, and face and joints swollen. Isabel came to him on steroids, aspirin, and acid blockers, and was chronically “tired and miserable,” writes the doctor in the Huffington Post.

And just like with the case of pop singer Selena Gomez’s lupus treatment, Isabel was recommended to take a chemotherapy drug to suppress the activity of her immune system daily. None of the medications were making her any better, and her former doctors wanted to put her on a TNF alpha blocker – an immune suppressant that while may reduce some symptoms, adds a great risk of cancer and death from the infection.

Refusing to accept that as her fate, she was brought to Dr. Hyman and less than a year later, she was symptom-free, her blood tests were normal, and she was off all her medications.

What Dr. Hyman did was simple, yet remains a mystery to most modern MDs trained in medical schools through curriculum heavily slanted toward the pharmaceutical industry. Instead of covering up the symptoms with drugs, Dr. Hyman found the underlying causes of her condition – inflammation in her body.

Isabel had to adjust her diet – avoid gluten, dairy and sugar, and take a few supplements to cleanse the body and help it heal itself (a multivitamin, vitamins D, B12, and folate, fish oil, anti-inflammatory evening primrose oil, an anti-fungal, a probiotic, and a mercury chelating agent).

Very soon she was once again “completely healthy,” writes the doctor in a 2015 blog post, sharing Isabel’s story with his audience.

“I can ride my horse again, I’m off all these stupid medications, and…I feel great!” a beaming Isabel exclaims in the short video below from 2010:

Autoimmune Diseases in America

An autoimmune disease is a condition in which the immune system, meant to protect the body, repeatedly and mistakenly attacks healthy cells. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, there are more than 80 types of autoimmune diseases, and they can affect different body parts. These diseases include celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, fibromyalgia, and type 1 diabetes (see the full list). The American Autoimmune Related Disease Association (AARDA) estimates that about 50 million Americans live with an autoimmune disease. At least to mainstream medicine, the cause of this disease is unknown. The major symptom uniting all autoimmune diseases is inflammation.

Medical treatments differ depending on the disease but often include immunosuppressant drugs, pain medications, hormone replacement therapy, and anti-inflammatory drugs, according to Healthline. But as we see with Isabel’s case, these type of interventions do not work for everyone, and even when they do work, they have many side effects.

quote 1

The Loss of Case Study Evidence in Medicine

Dr. Hyman writes that in the past doctors made observations and recorded the results of how their patients responded to the chosen treatment plan. These records were published as “case studies” and shared with other doctors. Unfortunately today, even the most successful case studies are brushed off as “anecdotes” and are not taken seriously. As the result millions of patients may be prevented from receiving the treatments they need because of the lack of randomized controlled trials of these treatments (the only evidence mainstream medicine takes into consideration).

“[M]edicine today approaches most disease by suppressing, covering over, blocking, or otherwise interfering with the body’s biology. We generally do not attempt to seriously address the underlying problems that lead to the disease in the first place,” writes Dr. Hyman.

What he recommends instead is functional medicine.

Functional Medicine: A New Approach to Health

Functional medicine is a fairly new global movement that instead of just looking at the symptoms, takes into consideration the synergy of the whole body and its interaction with the environment. Its goal is to restore balance in the body as a whole instead of focusing on one organ or one issue. To learn more about it, you can look at the programs by The Institute for Functional Medicineand check out this textbook recommended by Dr. Hyman in his blog – Textbook of Functional Medicine.

Treating Autoimmune Disease Naturally

Dr. Hyman lists a few steps to consider in order to treat an autoimmune disease. First of all any hidden issues in the body need to be addressed: yeast infections, viruses, bacteria, or Lyme disease.

Second, it is important to check for any allergies, gluten and dairy being the two most common ones. Then, the person should get a heavy metal testing, especially for mercury. Mercury can enter the body from flu shots, fish, amalgam fillings and other sources.

It is vital to take care of your gut, and make sure the whole digestive tract is working properly. A quality probiotic is very helpful, and other vitamins are needed to help restore the immune system. And finally, the person should not forget to exercise regularly and take care of their stress levels by adding yoga, meditation, simple hobbies that allow them to let go of worries and other relaxation techniques to their lifestyle.

In Isabel’s case Dr. Hyman writes“Some may dismiss this as an anecdote, or a ‘spontaneous remission,’ or claim the testing methods unconventional, or the treatments used unproven. But if there is a shimmer of a possibility that this approach works, that it can help patients recover from some of the most debilitating, devastating human diseases out there, are we not obligated to investigate further?”

Borde man lyfta fram matberoende mer? – Absolut.

I can eat all the food and I feel awesome!

Interesting post about dairy and wheat products…

Do More Than Exist

In the States I was always told that if I travel to another country the food and water will make me sick.  We have always heard that developing countries are so dirty and the water is so bad that people from the States cannot handle it at all.  So, the week before our trip to Bolivia, I started preparing our bodies.  Hubby and I took probiotics and all 6 of us put Diatomaceous Earth in our smoothies every day.  Since 3 of us cannot have gluten or dairy, I loaded our backpacks full of granola bars, fruit snacks, and a few other things to survive on until we figured out the food situation.  I assumed that I would not be able to speak the language well enough to tell people “no flour or milk” so I wanted to be prepared.  On the plus side, I joked that the last few pounds I…

10 Causes of Fibromyalgia Your Doctor Doesn’t Know About

I’ve struggled with a lot of those symptoms, and changed my food habits thoroughly. Combined with a lot of Jin Shin Jyutsu too, I am in a so much better health – to not eat sugar, gluten/wheat and dairy is one big part of it 🙂

 Article from Dr. Amy Myers

It’s estimated that fibromyalgia affects approximately 10 million people in the United States. Fibromyalgia is classically characterized by chronic pain, particularly muscle pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, brain fog or cognitive impairment, depression and painful tender points throughout the body.

Conventional medicine has yet to uncover the cause of fibromyalgia and only offers management of symptoms through pain medications and antidepressants.

Functional medicine, on the other hand, looks to find the root cause of fibromyalgia and other chronic diseases, treating the problem at the root level to restore the patient to health. As a functional medicine physician, I’ve helped many patients recover from fibromyalgia. Below are the top ten root causes of fibromyalgia I see in my clinic.

1. Gluten intolerance

Gluten has been liked to more than 55 diseases and is often called the “big masquerader.” The reason for this is that the majority of gluten intolerance symptoms are not digestive in nature, but are instead neurological, such as pain, cognitive impairment, sleep disturbances, behavioral issues, fatigue and depression.

2. Candida overgrowth

Candida is a fungus, or yeast, and a very small amount of it lives in your intestines. When overproduced, Candida breaks down the wall of the intestines and penetrates the bloodstream, releasing toxic byproducts into your body and causing a host of unpleasant symptoms such as brain fog, fatigue, digestive issues and pain. Virtually every one of my patients with fibromyalgia has had Candida overgrowth.

3. Thyroid

It’s vital that your doctor check all six blood markers to accurately measure your thyroid gland’s function. It’s also imperative that your doctor use the optimal levels rather than the standard reference range when assessing and diagnosing thyroid disorders. Getting my patient’s thyroid levels into an optimal range typically alleviates their fatigue, brain fog, sleep disturbances and depression.

4. Vitamin deficiencies

Magnesium, vitamin D and B12 deficiency are the most common vitamin deficiencies I see in those who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I’ve had several patients completely reverse their fibromyalgia symptoms with magnesium alone. The best way to measure magnesium is a red blood cell (RBC) magnesium level, which can be tested through any conventional lab.

5. Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) and Leaky gut

There are more bacteria in us and on us then there are of our own cells. When these bacteria get out of balance through use of antibiotics or a sugar-rich diet, we can lose our ability to digest and absorb nutrients, particularly B12. Gluten can cause SIBO and leaky gut and SIBO and leaky gut can lead gluten and other food intolerances. It’s a catch-22 and a vicious cycle. You must “fix the gut” first in anyone with fibromyalgia.

6. Mycotoxins

Mycotoxins are very toxic substances produced by molds. Conventional environmental mold testing only tests for levels of mold spores and does not test for mycotoxins. I use a urine mycotoxin test in my clinic to determine if someone has been exposed to toxic molds.

7. Mercury toxicity

I recommend that all my patients find a biological dentist and have their mercury amalgam fillings removed. Mercury is toxic to our bodies and can be one piece of the puzzle for those with fibromyalgia. I then recommend heavy metal testing using a pre- and post-DMPS urine challenge test.

8. Adrenal fatigue

Adrenal fatigue is a result of the chronic stress. Chronic pain is a stress to the adrenal glands, though it’s typically not the initial adrenal stressor. The initial stressor is usually something such as food intolerances, Candida, mercury toxicity, vitamin deficiencies or mycotoxins. My goal is to support the adrenals with adaptogenic herbs while we search for the root cause of the stress and correct it.

9. MTHFR mutations

This is a genetic test you can get though any conventional lab. The more mutations you have to the MTHFR gene the less able you are to methylate and detoxify toxins, such as mercury and lead. The more mutations you have at this gene the higher your requirements for methyl-B6, methyl-B12 and folinic acid in order to keep your detoxification pathways working properly.

10. Glutathione deficiency

Glutathione is the most critical part of our body’s detoxification system. Glutathione gets recycled in our body — unless our toxic burden gets too high, or we lack GSTM1 and GSTP1, the enzymes needed to recycle and produce glutathione. Taking glutathione or the precursors (NAC, alpha lipoic acid, milk thistle) often help dramatically with fatigue.

As you can see from the above list, many of these causes are interrelated, and often there’s no single root cause of fibromyalgia. Because getting to the root can be complex, I recommend that you find a functional medicine physician in your area to help uncover the root cause for you. You don’t need to suffer needlessly or mask your symptoms with pain medications and antidepressants. There are doctors likes myself who can help you!

8 foods people think are healthy (but aren’t)

This is a link from MindBodyGreen, interesting facts about food we might think are healthy, but are not so good… here’s the first words on the blogpost, then there are 8 slideshows you will find when you click on the link:

Between the mainstream media, the Food Pyramid, the gazillions of health blogs out there, and the premise that you can just walk into an organic store and anything you pull off the shelves will be healthy, it’s not hard to see why so many of us are confused as to what is actually healthy and what isn’t.
Being a wellness warrior is tricky business, and I don’t think anyone is exempt from falling into the trap of thinking something is healthy, only to find out later that it totally isn’t. Here are just some of the food items commonly confused thanks to clever marketing.

Video – Farmageddon – The truth about the food and dairy industry

Another video about food 🙂

As they say in the video, the 64 000 dollar question is why the government put so much effort into shut down all these small farmers, to ban this…. one would think that it’s good to eat healthy, local grown food…

and this is an article about one of the families in the video:

SWAT Team Raids Ohio Co-op

On Monday, December 1, a SWAT team with semi-automatic rifles entered the private home of the Stowers family in LaGrange, Ohio, herded the family onto the couches in the living room, and kept guns trained on parents, children, infants and toddlers, from approximately 11 AM to 8 PM. The team was aggressive and belligerent. The children were quite traumatized. At some point, the “bad cop” SWAT team was relieved by another team, a “good cop” team that tried to befriend the family. The Stowers family has run a very large, well-known food cooperative calledManna Storehouse on the western side of the greater Cleveland area for many years. [Update]

There were agents from the Department of Agriculture present, one of them identified as Bill Lesho. The search warrant is reportedly suspicious-looking. Agents began rifling through all of the family’s possessions, a task that lasted hours and resulted in a complete upheaval of every private area in the home. Many items were taken that were not listed on the search warrant. The family was not permitted a phone call, and they were not told what crime they were being charged with. They were not read their rights. Over ten thousand dollars worth of food was taken, including the family’s personal stock of food for the coming year. All of their computers, and all of their cell phones were taken, as well as phone and contact records. The food cooperative was virtually shut down. There was no rational explanation, nor justification, for this extreme violation of Constitutional rights.

Presumably Manna Storehouse might eventually be charged with running a retail establishment without a license. Why then the Gestapo-type interrogation for a 3rd degree misdemeanor charge? This incident has raised the ominous specter of a restrictive new era in State regulation and enforcement over the nation’s private food supply.

This same type of abusive search and seizure was reported by those innocents who fell victim to oppressive federal drug laws passed in the 1990s. The present circumstance raises the obvious question: is there some rabid new interpretation of an existing drug law that considers food a controlled substance worthy of a nasty SWAT operation? Or worse, is there a previously unrecognized provision(s) pertaining to food in the Homeland Security measures? Some have suggested that it was merely an out-of-control, hot-to-trot ODA agent, and, if so, this would be a best-case scenario. Anything else might spell the beginning of the end for the freedom to eat unregulated and unmonitored food.

One blogger familiar with the Ohio situation has reported that:

“Interestingly, I believe they [Manna Storehouse] said a month or so ago, an undercover ODA official came to their little store and claimed to have a sick father wanting to join the co-op. Both the owner and her daughter-in-law had a horrible feeling about the man, and decided not to allow him into the co-op and notified him by certified mail. He came back to the co-op demanding to be part of it. They refused and gave him names of other businesses and health food stores closer to his home. Not coincidentally, this man was there yesterday as part of the raid.”

The same blog also noted that the Ohio Department of Agriculture has been chastised by the courts in several previous instances for its aggression, including trying to entrap an Amish man in a raw milk “sale,” which backfired when it became known that the Amish believe in a literal interpretation of “give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away” (Matthew 5:42)

The issue appears to be the discovery of a bit of non-institutional beef in an Oberlin College food service freezer a year ago that was tracked down by a county sanitation official to Manna Storehouse. Oberlin College’s student food coop is widely known for its strident ideological stance about eating organic foods. It seems that the Oberlin student food cooperative had joined the Manna Storehouse food cooperative in order to buy organic foods in bulk from the national organic food distributor United, which services buying clubs across the nation. The sanitation official, James Boddy, evidently contacted the Ohio Department of Agriculture. After the first contact by state ODA officials, Manna Storehouse reportedly wrote them a letter requesting assistance and guidelines for complying with the law. This letter was never answered. Rather, the ODA agent tried several times to infiltrate the coop, as described above. When his attempts failed, the SWAT team showed up!

Food cooperatives and buying clubs have been an active part of the American landscape for over a generation. In the 1970s, with the rise of the organic food industry (a direct outgrowth of the hippie back-to-nature movement) food coops started up all over the country. These were groups of people who freely associated for the purpose of combining their buying power so that they could order organic food items in bulk and case lots. Anyone who was part of these coops in the early era will remember the messy breakdown of 35 pounds of peanut butter and 5 gallon drums of honey!

These buying clubs have persisted and flourished over the years due to their ability to purchase high quality organic foods at reduced prices in bulk quantities. Most cooperatives have participated greatly in the local agrarian economies, supporting neighborhood organic farmers with purchases of produce, eggs, chickens, etc. The groups also purchase food from a number of different local, regional and national distributors, many of them family-based businesses who truck the food themselves. Some of these food cooperatives have become large enough to set up mini-storefront operations where members can drop in and purchase items leftover from case lot sales. Manna Storehouse had established itself in such a manner, using a small enclosed breezeway attached to their home. It was a folksy place with old wooden floors where coop members stopped by to chat and snack on bags of organic corn chips.

The state of Ohio boasts the second largest Amish population in the country. Many of the Amish live on acreages where they raise their own food, not unlike Manna Storehouse, and sell off the extras to neighbors and church members. There is a sense of foreboding that this state crackdown on a longstanding, reputable food cooperative operation could adversely impact the peaceful agrarian way of life not only for the Amish, but homeschoolers and those families living off the land on rural acreages. It raises the disturbing possibility that it could become a crime to raise your own food, buy eggs from the farmer down the road, or butcher your own chickens for family and friends – bustling activities that routinely take place in backwater America.

The freedom to purchase food directly form the source is increasingly under attack. Forthose who have food allergies and chemical intolerances, or who are on special medical diets, this is becoming a serious health issue. Will Americans retain the right to purchase food that is uncontaminated by pesticides, herbicides, allergens, additives, dyes, preservatives, MSG, GMOs, radiation, etc.? The melamine scare from China underscores the increasingly inferior and suspect quality of modern processed institutional foods. One blog, commenting on the bizarre and troubling Manna Storehouse situation, observed that:

“No one is saying exactly why. At the same time the FDA says it is safe to eat the 40% of tainted beef found in Costco’s and Sam’s all over the nation. These farm raids are very common now. Every farmer needs to fully equipped [sic] for the possibility of it happening to them. The Farmer To Consumer Legal Defense Fund was created just for this purpose. The USDA just released their plans to put a law into action that will put all small farmers out of business. Animals for the sale of meat or milk will only be allowed in commercial farms, even the organic ones.”December 3, 2008 7:09 PM

Local food cooperative searched by state

The Morning Journal
Wednesday, December 3, 2008 6:42 AM EST

PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP — An Ohio Department of Agriculture agent seized food, electronic devices and documents from a Pittsfield Township organic and natural food cooperative believed to be unlicensed, according to a search warrant filed yesterday in Lorain County Common Pleas Court. Jacqueline and John Stowers, owners of the Manna Storehouse, 43565 SR 303, were inspected in November 2007 by the Lorain County General Health District, according to court records.

On Monday, ODA enforcement agent William Lesho confiscated hundreds of pounds of processed beef and large amounts of lamb, turkey and other perishable products in addition to office files, a computer, two cell phones and other electronic devices, according to the search warrant inventory. The items were taken to establish the Stowers’ ownership in any property, records of hidden wealth or illegal income and anything that would establish illegal activity, according to the search warrant affidavit. Jacqueline Stowers declined to comment because she had not seen the court papers yesterday evening.

A health district sanitarian and two other inspectors visited the cooperative on Nov. 30, 2007, to make observations and were told to leave. Jacqueline Stowers wrote in a December 2007 letter to the sanitarian that the inspectors never had permission to be on their property and that the Manna Storehouse is not operating a retail food establishment that requires a license. “We declare now that we do not want to be a ‘licensed retail food establishment’ or a ‘food service operation’ and we do not plan to become one in the future and that we will not knowingly conduct any activities that would require that type of licensing,” she wrote.

The matter was forwarded to the Lorain County Prosecutor’s Office after the Lorain County General Health District received her letter, according to court records.

Rawesome Farm Buying Club
Raided Again
Club Manager, Farmer and Weston A. Price Chapter Leader Arrested

Weston A. Price Foundation | August 3, 2011

Protest Rally Planned for 8:00am Thursday August 4

August 3, 2011 — Los Angeles, California — Public Health Officials today descended once again on a buying club, that specializes in raw foods. Club organizer, James Stewart was arrested at his home, the locks to his personal residence were changed, his papers, money and computer seized. At the same time, farmer Sharon Palmer and Weston A. Price Foundation volunteer chapter leader Victoria Bloch Coulter were arrested. All three were charged with Section 182A-Conspiracy to Commit a Crime. Bond for James Stewart was set at $123,000. Bail for Bloch is recommended at $60,000. Bail for Palmer is recommended at $121,000.

All this, in a state where raw milk is perfectly legal to sell, and even available through retail stores. The issue seems to be the club’s use of a herdshare or boarding agreement for its dairy goats. Recently, the California Department of Food and Agriculture issued a cease-and-desist order to a farmer boarding dairy animals for the animal owners. Another farmer, Mike Hulme of Evergreen Acres Goat Farm in San Jose, received a cease-and-desist letter from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office. Hulme and several people with ownership interest in goats kept at the farm are suing the state and county for interfering with their right to enter into a livestock boarding contract.

The state insists the farmers need dairy licenses to conduct such operations.

“It is apparent that there is an orchestrated effort on the part of public health officials to curb raw dairy access in California, and around the nation,” declares Pete Kennedy, Esq., President of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund.

Arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow in Department 30, Los Angeles Superior Court, Fifth Floor, Criminal Justice Center, 210 W. Temple St., Los Angeles. Court opens at 8:30 a.m. The District attorney’s office says it is likely they are to go before the judge during the morning session.

A protest rally on the Los Angeles Courthouse Steps is planned for tomorrow morning, when the three food rights activists are before the judge. Citizens concerned about access to healthy, locally produced foods are urged to attend.

Concerned citizens are asked to donate to the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, an organization that works to protect and expand consumer access to whole, unprocessed foods of their choice, and to pave the way for unregulated, direct trade between farmer and consumer.
